Although many people point toward the development of the movable type printing press four hundred years ago as the most important development in early printing, today's Long Island printing service would be quite a different business if Ottmar Mergenthaler hadn't invented the linotype composing machine in the late nineteenth century.  His machine allowed a single operator to be in control of everything from being the machinist to the type setter which meant that the printing machine only required a single employee. Many improvements to the machine have occurred over the last century and at least 1500 patents have been applied for regarding it.
