After becoming frustrated with a poorly performing vacuum cleaner in the late 1970s, James Dyson decided to research methods to create a vacuum cleaner that wouldn't lose suction due to particle contaminants and a gradual decrease in effectiveness. The original idea for Dyson vacuum cleaners came from when Dyson observed the method for removing sawdust from the air at a local sawmill. The large cylinders used to clean the air were something that Dyson thought might be usable in a vacuum. This observation led to the invention of the first bag-free vacuum prototypes in the early 1980s.
